Kite,
in Chinese called Fengzheng, is a kind of folk handicraft as well
as a entertainment tool. It is made of slender slips of bamboo as
the frame with thin paper plastered and a long thread to fly with.
Historical records show that the first kite was made in the Spring
and Autumn Period. But it was not for the purpose of entertainment
but military. Soldier in Song Dynasty loaded fire powder on kite
to distract enemies by tying a piece of kindling incense on the
fuse and flying it into the sky above the enemy camp, where it exploded
and caused chaos. Then they took the advantage to launch an attack
and defeated the enemy.
Only after the North Song Dynasty was paper kite increasingly made
and became popular amony ordinary people as entertainment tool.
China, as the birthplace of kite, holds all kinds of kite festivals
each year around April, amony which Weifang International Kite Festival
is the most famous one. Kite lovers from all over the world come
to Weifang, Shandong Province with their specially made kites to
compete.
